A group of 13 students from the St. Stephen's College  embarked on a field trip to study or rather understand the cause of  high rates of suicide and the mental distress associated with it in the Punjab belt, by selecting one of the most farmer suicide prone district of India - Mansa , Punjab.

All data was collected through a  survey questionnaire which collected quantitative data and through first person accounts which collected qualitative data. Through the wealth of data which was compiled , it was found out that the presence of Middlemen caused their revenues and profits to decline to such a level that they couldn't even cover the costs.  The redressal mechanism of the Government and its subsequent follow up wasn't enough to prevent the disastrous events .

ABOUT US >

The Rural Research Programme was established in 2019 by a group of undergraduate students from

St. Stephen’s College, to overcome the limited scope for rural engagement within urban university spaces. Our primary area of work is to understand some of the issues which are being faced by the rural population of India by conducting appropriate surveys. The objective of the Rural Research Programme is to bridge the gap in awareness among urban students by creating opportunities for participating in the discourse surrounding rural and agrarian affairs through systematic research.
